Symptoms of Oily Scalp

 

If your scalp is oily, it can cause a lot of problems. Oily scalps are often associated with acne, dandruff, and other scalp conditions. Here’s a look at some of the most common symptoms of an oily scalp:

 

  1. Acne. One of the most common reasons people have an oily scalp is that it contributes to acne. An over-production of oil on the skin can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts.

 

  1. Dandruff. If your scalp is oily and you also have dandruff, it’s likely because the oil aggravates the dandruff problem. The excess crude traps dead skin flakes between the hair follicles, leading to a build-up that’s hard to remove.

 

  1. Itchy Scalp Syndrome (ICS). ICS is an umbrella term for a bunch of different types of itchiness on the scalp that a variety of things can cause, including an over-production of oil or sweat on the skin, sebaceous gland problems, and fungal overgrowth.

 

  1. Itching after Shampooing. Many people experience itching after shampooing their hair – especially if their scalp is oily – because shampooing removes all the oils and dirt from your hair shafts. This leaves your hair dry and susceptible to irritating bacteria and fungi.

-Apply a topical treatment that contains an anti-inflammatory agent such as cortisone or ibuprofen. Apply the treatment twice a day to the affected areas.

 

-Use a shampoo that contains ingredients that remove oil and moisture from the hair follicles. Use the shampoo every day for two weeks.

 

-Apply an over-the-counter scalp cream that contains selenium or zinc. Apply the cream daily to the affected areas for four to six weeks.
